Jefferies Financial Group Inc. (NYSE:JEF) faces renewed scrutiny of its trade-finance business after Reuters, citing the Financial Times, reported on September 5 that LAM Trade Finance Group II had nearly $500 million of exposure to Radiant World, its founder, and another entity. The reported London freezing order covered up to $499 million.
On September 7, the fund applied for a freezing injunction in Singapore. Reuters described Jefferies Financial Group Inc. (NYSE:JEF) as holding a minority stake in the fund, which is run by a group unit.
The central question is how much of that exposure reaches common shareholders. Fund exposure, a court order's ceiling, and a parent-level loss measure different things. The reports do not establish the amount that Jefferies Financial Group Inc. (NYSE:JEF) ultimately stands to lose.
Third-party fund capital can absorb losses that would otherwise sit entirely on a financial institution's balance sheet. If Jefferies Financial Group Inc. (NYSE:JEF) has limited invested capital and no additional contractual obligations, its direct economic loss could be substantially below the reported fund exposure.
