PARAMARIBO, Suriname/CMC – Venezuela’s acting President, Delcy Rodríguez, arrived in Suriname Friday for an official visit to the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (Caricom) country, the state-owned Suriname Communication Service (CDS) has announced.It said that Rodríguez is visiting at the invitation of President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and that the two leaders will hold consultations on further strengthening cooperation in areas including agriculture, fisheries, hydrocarbons, connectivity, tourism, education, and capacity building.“The agreements reached during this visit will guide sustainable and results-oriented cooperation that contributes to the development, resilience, and prosperity of both countries and their communities,” CDS added.It said that the two heads of state will also exchange views on safeguarding shared interests within regional and multilateral forums and that the visit underscores the joint commitment of Suriname and Venezuela to further deepen relations.“We are very committed to our bilateral agenda; we will sign important agreements in different areas of cooperation. I always insist that this is the path: friendship, cooperation, a relationship where both countries and both peoples can benefit,” Rodríguez told reporters on her arrival.According to the CDS, Suriname and Venezuela have maintained diplomatic relations for 50 years and that “this special anniversary offers a fitting moment to reaffirm the close ties between the two countries, further deepen existing cooperation, and open new perspectives for a future-oriented, sustainable, and mutually beneficial collaboration”.The CDS said that in addition, opportunities will be explored to further expand economic and technical cooperation for the benefit of the development and well-being of both countries and their populations.Rodríguez came to office in January after United States led a military offensive that resulted in the removal of President Nicolás Maduro, who is in a New York jail awaiting trial on drugs and gun-related charges.Since her appointment Rodríguez has held discussions with Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley.Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Wednesday expressed her hope to meet with Rodríguez later this month on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
