Former President George W. Bush on Friday remembered 9/11 by painting the moment his chief of staff told him a second plane had hit the World Trade Center and that America was under attack.Bush was visiting Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida, at the time, where he proceeded to finish reading “The Pet Goat” to students in Kay Daniels’ second-grade classroom before stepping outside to address the nation.These days the photo sees more use as a meme than as a somber remembrance of the attacks, likely unbeknownst to the former commander in chief.Bush memorialized three other scenes from the day in separate oil paintings.One depicts the massive toxic dust cloud from the buildings’ collapse rising above the New York skyline. In the second, an outstretched hand cradles the badge of what would seem to be a fallen first responder. And in the third, an American flag is unfurled down the side of a building while its occupants salute from atop the roof.“Twenty-five years ago, the actions of an enemy revealed the spirit of the American people,” Bush wrote in a caption accompanying the paintings on social media. “May we always honor the precious lives stolen, and may God bless America.”Should you wish to see these in person, you’re in luck.
