MPs have voted down a bid to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales – as a second attempt to change the law was rejected by 286 to 270.
Labour’s Lauren Edwards, who had tabled the bill, said current law was “simply too cruel and too unjust to be allowed to stand”.
But opponents said the proposed measure had been “unsafe and unworkable” – and called for more resources to go towards social and palliative care.
