adsAfrica’s artificial intelligence story has entered a new phase as against when the continent’s technology companies largely consumed AI infrastructure built elsewhere, relying on global cloud providers, overseas data centers and foreign access to high-performance computing.
African technology companies and infrastructure providers are investing in the physical systems required to run AI locally ranging from GPU-powered data centres and sovereign cloud infrastructure and also fibre networks, energy systems and locally hosted computing capacity.
The shift is being driven by a simple realisation that owning the applications is not enough if the computing infrastructure, data and energy required to run them remain outside the continent.
However, building that infrastructure will require enormous capital, reliable electricity and increasingly complex regulatory compliance.
