Four members of Students for a Free Tibet were detained near Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam on Friday after they put up banners demanding an independent Tibet and protesting Beijing’s rule, according to a press release by the organisation. The protest took place ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit.The Delhi Police is yet to comment on the matter.Tibet has been under Chinese control since 1951, when Tibetan leaders signed an agreement allowing Beijing to station troops in the region.China established the Tibetan Autonomous Region in 1965. In name, this means Tibet is an autonomous region within China, but in practice it remains tightly controlled. The Tibetan government-in-exile, based in India’s Dharamshala, continues to seek independence for Tibet.This is a continuing source of tension between India and China. New Delhi also claims part of Tibet as its own territory.The pro-Tibet group called on BRICS leaders to “condemn China’s illegal occupation of Tibet” and its alleged human rights violations.They also raised concerns over Beijing’s large infrastructure projects on Tibetan rivers and called on India to take action against what they described as “China’s encroachment” along the Indo-Tibet border.Xi will be in Delhi to attend the BRICS Summit scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.Delhi has been under heavy security ahead of the summit.The BRICS grouping comprises India, Brazil, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.Written by Tanya Shrivastava.
