Brussels grants exemptions allowing Kyiv to buy US-made defence equipment
The Commission on Friday approved Ukraine’s request for €6.1bn to buy air and missile defence systems and drone equipment, granting five exemptions from its “Buy European” requirement, notably to purchase US-made Patriot missiles.
The package also includes funding for ammunition and electronic warfare equipment.
Three of the derogations cover Ukrainian-made drones and components exceeding cost thresholds, while two cover US-made equipment, in particular PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems, including through the NATO-coordinated PURL mechanism, Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius told reporters.
Ukraine has been pressing allies for more Patriot missiles as Russia intensifies its attacks, many of which have targeted civilian and energy infrastructure.
