In a plot reminiscent of Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Special 26’, a sacked driver allegedly joined hands with two serving Income Tax officials and others to stage a fake raid at his former employer’s Mumbai office and demand Rs 1 crore.The extortion attempt was foiled after the company owner asked the alleged raiding team to produce documents authorising the search. Andheri police have arrested 10 people in connection with the July 17 incident, including the two I-T officials.Police said former company driver Santosh Khopatkar, 37, allegedly masterminded the operation after being sacked about three months before the fake raid. Investigators suspect he wanted revenge against his former employer.The alleged raid took place at Two M Ophthotronics Pvt Ltd in Sahar Cargo Estate, Chakala. Police registered an FIR on September 4 based on a complaint filed by company owner Rajkumar Kandasami.According to the complaint, Kandasami was informed by his employees that I-T officials had arrived at the office. Later, two men in plain clothes allegedly approached Kandasami and his wife near their home, introduced themselves as Income Tax officials and showed an identity card.The two allegedly forced the couple into an aggregator cab and took them to the company’s office. Sub-inspector Rohan Surve said the accused questioned employees, examined company documents and took away the mobile phones of Kandasami, his wife and staff.The accused allegedly produced a purported search warrant and obtained Kandasami’s signature on it. They then questioned him about cash transactions, threatened him with a substantial penalty and offered to settle the purported tax case for Rs 1 crore.Kandasami, however, asked the alleged officials to produce the authorisation documents for the raid. When they failed to do so, the group left the office after spending around three hours there.Kandasami later checked with his chartered accountant and learnt that the Income Tax department had not ordered any raid at his company.Police said their investigation revealed that Khopatkar had provided information about the company to the alleged raiding team. He had allegedly approached the two I-T officials for help in conducting the raid after losing his job.The two serving Income Tax officials arrested in the case have been identified as inspector Sureshkumar Mishra, 57, posted at Piramal Chamber in Lalbaug, and tax assistant Sunil Gore, 59, posted at Kautilya Bhavan in BKC.Police said Mishra and Gore had allegedly carried out a similar raid at a company in Manpada and demanded Rs 65 lakh.Those arrested earlier in the Chakala case include Khopatkar, Vinay More, 37, Prem Sabnani, 50, Pragnya M, Reshma Shyamrao Warang, 41, and Shabina Shaikh, 48.DCP (West Zone-3) Datta Nalawade said police also took custody of Jitendra More from Thane and Ashok Shinde from Vile Parle West on Thursday. Both were already in judicial custody in connection with the Manpada case.Investigators led by senior inspector Umesh Machindar, inspector Atul Nikam, assistant inspector Ramdas Kadam and sub-inspectors Rohan Surve and Rameshwar Karpe analysed call records, mobile numbers, dump data, location details and CCTV footage from government and private cameras.Police are now examining the seized phones for calls, chats, WhatsApp messages and financial transactions to establish the alleged conspiracy, identify other associates and determine the role of each accused.
