Naomie Harris narrates Swim Sistas, a short documentary directed by actress and author Catherine Joy White that was designed as a “poetic and visually rich love letter to water, sisterhood, and the resilience of Black women across generations.” Hannah Congdon’s short doc The Long Away Game tells the story of a female Afghan refugee soccer player finding a home and community in Yorkshire, England. And Julie Magnaudet’s comedic short The Contraception Fair, starring Alex Rider‘s Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́, Derry Girls‘ Kathy Kiera Clarke and The Baby‘s Amber Grappy, follows a young woman who wants to stop taking the birth control pill, only to find herself at the “Female Contraception Fair,” an imaginary place where female contraceptive methods compete for her attention and pressure her to make a choice.
Three films by three female directors, backed by one female-led production company that is focused on character-driven narratives that surprise that has one badass name: Candid Broads Productions.
Founded in 2020 in London by French-British actress and producer Oriane Pick, who serves as CEO and founder, the company’s team also features producer Anaïs Ferrato. The goal, as Candid Broads says on its website, is “to bring unspoken truths from underrepresented communities to the forefront of the entertainment industry” and “ensuring diverse female representation both in front of and behind the camera.”
