Uber and Guangzhou-based WeRide are to begin testing autonomous vehicles in Madrid ahead of a planned commercial launch this year, after receiving the first EU approval for WeRide’s GXR autonomous minivan.

The companies are working with fleet operator AVOMO to deploy the service under Spain’s first permit for testing Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles on public roads.

It’s the EU’s first approval for WeRide’s GXR, which has also been deployed commercially in other markets including China and the United Arab Emirates, the latter under another partnership with Uber.
