On September 9, 2001, Americans across the country gathered in front of their TVs for the first episode of a new HBO miniseries—a series that remains one of their most enduring successes. After the distinctive HBO logo and static played, but before the opening theme music that would later become iconic, audiences watched a series of short interviews with old men.
