President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that he expects to meet US President Donald Trump in New York later this month as Washington renews efforts to move stalled talks on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine forward. He indicated that the meeting with Trump could provide greater clarity on the next steps in the diplomatic process. “I think that... I can be more open after the New York meeting with President Trump,” he said. Zelensky added that Ukrainian and US negotiators remained in constant contact and that he hoped for progress on energy and grain talks following the planned meeting. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, meanwhile, said Thursday that he had spoken with Trump “a couple of times” recently about Russia’s war against Ukraine as well as the conflict involving Iran. Carney said the conversations reflected Canada’s responsibility to continue working with Washington despite tensions between the two countries, but gave no details about the discussions.
