Many people on social media are skeptical about Donald Trump’s promise to send $5,000 checks to every adult American citizen if Republicans hold Congress.Very skeptical.“If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000. It will be called the ‘Trump dividend,’” Trump vowed during the GOP’s midterm convention Wednesday night. The promise is legally sketchy at best, BBC correspondent Sarah Smith noted.“It’s not clear that it’s legal to make a promise like that, because it is against the law to try and offer a payment to influence people on how they are going to vote,” she said.It would cost an estimated $1.3 trillion to send the money to citizens ― which Congress would have to approve of ― and would increase inflation even more. But there’s another thing to consider: Trump has a history of broken promises. His multiple previous vows to send cash payments to Americans have yet to come to fruition. “He promised Americans $2,000 rebates during his tariff policy, when that was enacted, but after court challenges to the tariffs themselves, those $2,000 checks, so far, have not materialized,” Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich noted Thursday.Trump also previously said he’d give Americans a cut of the savings promised by Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency — which has definitely not happened. No wonder some social media users skewered the president’s latest promise.Remember the $2,000 tariff checks Trump promised Americans? Still waiting. 💸Now it’s: “If Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000.”Another election. At what point does promising voters $5,000 only if your party wins start looking less like policy and more like… https://t.co/OfWf7ZnjaC— ᴀɴɢ 🌸 (@Ang_Xrp) September 10, 2026Aside from the blatant illegality here, you’ll get this right after your tariff dividend, your freedom dividend, Trump’s health care plan, and your $2 gas https://t.co/6Gcv47MO97— Angry Staffer (@Angry_Staffer) September 10, 2026Wait...did we already get our DOGE checks, Tariff Checks, and our concepts of a health care plan already? Its like the parent that promises you they'll show up for your recital and they never do. But man are they good at promising you that they will be at the next one. Its sad https://t.co/yLJjCB7M1H— Chilled Chaos (@ChilledChaos) September 10, 2026Here's what I think about Trump's pledge to give everyone $5,000 if he wins the midterms:It's as real as Trump's promise to lower costs on Day 1.Check the receipts from @Groundwork for the 15 times Trump promised Americans $$$.Remember the DOGE dividend? pic.twitter.com/04kaH3Erxr— Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) September 10, 2026Imagine believing that Senate Republicans are going to pass a stand alone $1 trillion spending bill that goes directly to voters 😆 https://t.co/By4ZpOiA6u— Hunter Wallace (@LutherEnjoyer) September 10, 2026
