OpenAI appears to be signaling a possible Data agent for ChatGPT Work, a development that could eventually help companies turn connected business data into useful outputs and multi-step workflows. The important distinction is that OpenAI has not yet published customer-facing documentation describing a standalone ChatGPT Work feature by that name. For now, the stronger public story is ChatGPT Work’s broader agent platform and the direction it suggests for data-driven work.
In OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work announcement, published July 9, 2026, the company describes an agent in ChatGPT built for longer tasks. Its documented capabilities include creating slides, sheets, documents and sites, using Scheduled Tasks, coordinating work across apps, and working with apps and files. OpenAI says the experience is powered by GPT-5.6 and is available across plans with enterprise governance.
A Data agent would be a more specific layer on top of that general capability. If released publicly, it could give teams a focused way to ask questions of operational data, create outputs from it and connect those results to day-to-day workflows. That is a credible direction for OpenAI, but it is not yet a published product specification.
