Northern Nigeria Students' Union Gives Modibbo Adama University 72 Hours To Lift Suspension Of Student Over Protest

According to the university, unauthorised protests would be treated as misconduct.

The Association of Northern Nigerian Students (ANNS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the management of Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, Adamawa State, to lift the indefinite suspension of a 500-level student, Promise Bitrus, over his alleged involvement in a protest on campus.

Bitrus, a student of the Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, was indefinitely suspended by the university management on September 7, 2026, following his participation in a protest over a recent accident involving university students.

In a suspension letter signed on behalf of the Registrar by Mrs Fatsuma Dauda Husain of the Academic Division, the university said Bitrus participated in the protest despite a circular issued on September 6 banning planned student protests.

The university said the circular had informed the Student Affairs Officer, the Student Union Government (SUG) and the entire university community that any protest must be approved by the university management and relevant security agencies.
