Jahnie van Zyl, 17, secured her first professional international tournament when she won the ITF World Tennis Tour W15 Cap d’Agde in France.
South Africa’s next generation of tennis talent continues to command attention on the world stage, anchored by remarkable performances from two of the nation’s brightest young prospects: Jahnie van Zyl and Connor Doig.
Van Zyl recently achieved a career-defining breakthrough, capturing her maiden professional women’s singles title at the ITF World Tennis Tour W15 Cap d’Agde in France.
The 17-year-old from Potchefstroom displayed composure beyond her years on the French clay during the final against the Czech Republic’s Michaela Bayerlová. After falling behind 3-5 in the opening set, Van Zyl mounted a staggering turnaround, winning 10 consecutive games to seal the first set 7-5 before powering through a flawless 6-0 second set to claim the trophy.
Van Zyl’s week in Cap d'Agde was a masterclass in resilience, racking up five victories over the tournament. She eased past the Ivory Coast's Emira Diabate (6-1, 6-3), France’s Hajar Crinebouch (6-3, 6-0), and Spain’s Marta Soriano Santiago (6-2, 6-3) in straight sets. Her sternest challenge came in the semi-finals against Belgium’s Romane Longueville, where she dug deep to pull off a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
