Nearly one in every three doctor posts in Telangana’s government teaching and secondary hospitals is vacant, with 2,238 posts out of total 7,515 posts lying unfilled, according to figures furnished by the Health department in the Legislative Council on Thursday.The figures were provided in response to a question raised by MLC Naveen Kumar Kurumaiahgari. The government said Telangana has 203 government hospitals, including 35 teaching hospitals, 16 speciality hospitals and 152 secondary hospitals. The State has 36,984 beds in secondary and tertiary hospitals.The figures reveal a sharper staffing gap in the State’s secondary healthcare system. Under the Directorate of Secondary Health hospitals, there are 4,092 sanctioned posts, but only 2,612 are currently working, leaving 1,480 vacancies. The working strength stands at just 53% of the sanctioned posts.The district-wise numbers show that Hyderabad has the highest number of vacancies, with 148 posts vacant against 475 sanctioned posts. Nizamabad follows closely with 142 vacancies out of 253 sanctioned posts, while Khammam has 114 vacancies against 246 sanctioned posts. Rangareddy and Vikarabad each have 98 vacant posts, while Bhadradri Kothagudem has 87 vacancies and Kamareddy has 84.At the other end of the scale, Karimnagar has just three vacancies, with 37 of its 40 sanctioned posts occupied. Rajanna Sircilla has four vacancies, while Hanumakonda has six. Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Kumuram Bheem Asifabad have eight vacancies each.Meanwhile, the staffing position in government medical colleges and hospitals is comparatively better. The data lists 3,423 required posts, with 2,942 available, and reports 758 vacancies. The available strength is shown as 86%.GMC Mahbubnagar has the highest number of vacancies among the institutions listed, with 75 vacant posts, followed by 63 in GMC Bhadradri Kothagudem, 62 in GMC Asifabad, 57 in GMC Mahabubabad, 51 in GMC Wanaparthy, 46 in GMC Siddipet, 45 in GMC Jayashankar Bhupalpally and 40 in SIMS Ramagundam.Several institutions have no vacancies according to the data. These include Gandhi Medical College, Osmania Medical College, GMC Nalgonda, GMC Karimnagar, GMC Maheshwaram and GMC Yadadri. The data also shows that some institutions have more personnel available than the number of posts listed as required, including Gandhi Medical College, which has 204 available against 168 sanctioned, and Osmania Medical College, which has 372 available against 168 sanctioned.
