He wants to recreate the coalition that elected him in 2024 and give his supporters a personal reason to vote when his name is absent.The speech was aimed primarily at that base. It was a classic Trump rally rather than a traditional midterm pitch aimed to bring more voters into the tent. The emphasis was on the political red meat that animates his base: immigration, public safety and culture-war issues while warning that Democrats would undo what Republicans have accomplished.But Trump also tried to answer the issue that continues to hang over Republicans -- affordability -- though his effectiveness is questionable.He blamed the Biden administration for economic pain and promoted tax breaks on tips, overtime and Social Security. Trump's task was energizing his movement. Vance's opportunity is showing whether that movement can be translated into a tighter message for voters beyond the base.That makes Thursday night both the convention's closing argument for 2026 and an early look at how Vance may position himself for 2028.
