Donald Trump, US President has offered to pay every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress in November, putting an eye catching promise at the centre of his party’s midterm campaign.

Trump made the proposal during a nearly two hour speech on Wednesday at the first Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas, where he urged voters to treat him as though he were on the ballot despite being constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.
“I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” Trump told a supportive crowd at the American Airlines Center, promising to campaign across states for Republican candidates.
The proposed payment, which Trump called a “Trump dividend”, could cost more than $1 trillion if extended to the roughly 270 million adults in the United States. It was not immediately clear how the payments would be funded, whether Trump has the legal authority to make them or whether congressional approval would be required.
