The Northern Irishman is now aiming to retain his crown at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg.‌Fresh off a historic first Masters win, McIlroy arrived at the Irish Open 12 months ago to relentless cheers from fans basking in his Career Grand Slam. He quietly began the tournament, posting a 71, before taking off in rounds two and three, carding 66 and 68, respectively.‌Heading into the final round, McIlroy was four strokes off the lead before having to match a late Sunday surge by Sweden's Joakim Lagergren. As McIlroy approached the 18th, he trailed Lagergren by two and needed an eagle to force a play-off. He managed exactly that, sinking a 28-footer before winning the play-off at the third hole and bagging the £752k top prize.‌The 37-year-old will have a third Irish Open title on his mind this week. But as he approached the structure, he noticed a young girl from the fan area shouting his name.‌In a kind-hearted move, McIlroy walked over to the youngster and threw her the ball he had been using that day. Overwhelmed, the girl burst into tears of joy.She hugged the woman next to her, presumably her mother, then stared at the ball in youthful amazement. McIlroy's actions touched commentators, as they let out a collective 'Aww'. He'd lift the title a day later with wife Erica Stoll and daughter Poppy in attendance.‌The atmosphere at the Irish Open will be slightly different this year, though, as the course owner, US President Donald Trump, is set to attend during the competition's final stages.It has been confirmed that Trump plans to be at the venue for the weekend play and it has even been indicated that he may hand the trophy to the winner. Because of the increased security his presence will bring, which will involve the US Secret Service, An Garda Síochána and the Irish Defence Forces, McIlroy admits this renewal will be distinct.‌"I think the weekend, especially when he's here [will feel different], crowds will be limited. Obviously, there's a lot that goes on," McIlroy told BBC Sport."So, logistically, it provides some challenges, absolutely. But at the same time, if he wants to come and watch the Irish Open, who are we to say no?"The one thing I'd say is his golf resorts have hosted PGA Tour events, European Tour events, LIV events. He's a big fan of golf, he's a wonderful supporter of golf.Article continues below"He's got a beautiful property here in Doonbeg - it's the first time I've played it.
