Bulgaria’s government has approved changes to the roadmap for completing the Struma highway, updating the timetable for the project and setting out measures to maintain cooperation with environmental organizations.
The government adopted the decision on September 9, amending Decision No. 62 of February 12, 2025, which established the roadmap for completing the highway.
The changes are intended to ensure continued coordination and constructive dialogue with non-governmental organizations during the implementation of the project. They also provide for environmental considerations to be taken into account in the preparation and construction of Lot 3.2 of the Struma highway.
The government said the deadlines under Section I of the roadmap have been updated to reflect the project’s current status and address delays accumulated after years of disputes between state institutions and non-governmental organizations over the technical solution for completing the strategically important route.
The Struma highway is considered important for Bulgaria’s national security and transport connectivity with neighboring EU and NATO member states Romania and Greece.
