A surprise visit to Greece by Turkey’s intelligence chief has raised eyebrows
Greece is relying on France to push forward a project to lay one of the world’s deepest and longest submarine power cables, designed to link the electricity grids of Israel, Greece, and Cyprus.
The new momentum comes as neighbouring Turkey continues to challenge the project, and raises the prospect of another confrontation in the eastern Mediterranean.
The partly EU-funded project was on the agenda of a meeting between Emmanuel Macron, the French president, and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek prime minister, in Paris on Wednesday.
If completed, it would be the first time energy-isolated Cyprus is connected to the European electricity grid, as well as Israel’s first electricity interconnection with another country.
