For the first time in 20 years, Iran’s nuclear file has been officially referred back to the United Nations Security Council.
On Wednesday, September 9, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors voted that Iran was in non-compliance with its safeguards obligations and reported the issue to the Security Council.
However, unlike two decades ago, the primary dispute today is not merely active centrifuges, but approximately 440 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium that IAEA inspectors have been unable to verify or inspect for over a year.
The agency admits it lacks precise visibility into the exact location, volume, and chemical form of these stockpiles.
