President Donald Trump claimed James Talarico ran a campaign called “beat meat” and childishly riffed on the term for quite a while during his midterm convention speech on Wednesday. “He wants to beat meat?” he snickered.Trump brought up the Texas Democrat running for senator by calling him “Tala-Freako” and eventually worked up to his bit.“He was also somebody that hated eating meat,” Trump told Republicans in Dallas’ American Airlines Center. “But he ran a campaign to beat meat. He called it ‘beat meat.’ I don’t know what the hell he meant by that. These people are gonna tell me, what the hell is he... he wants to beat meat?”The president milked that one.“But it was bad for his image so he started eating meat,” he said. “And he recently, hah hah, it’s getting worse, I’m getting myself in trouble, it’s getting worse.... But he was recently seen having a barbecue and eating a lot of meat. But that’s what happened. He ate it and then he was seen running backstage into a room and throwing up all over the place. He doesn’t like meat.”Talarico doesn’t seem to have publicly barfed after eating something off the grill or used the term “beat meat” as a campaign slogan. He also says he enjoys meat.“I’m an eighth-generation Texan. I’ve been eating barbecue since before Ken Paxton’s first indictment, he said previously in reference to his scandal-plagued Republican opponent. “And if all they have on me is lying about me being a vegan, I feel pretty good about our chances this November.”A recent New York Times aggregation of polls showed Talarico ahead in many of them.
