The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Delhi High Court to continue monitoring the case concerning the tragic Satya Niketan building collapse in which seven people were killed and 12 injured.The court took note of the steps being taken by the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) pursuant to its earlier orders concerning incidents of building collapses and fires in Delhi and Lucknow.The matter came before the Supreme Court following the incident in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area near Moti Bagh. The Delhi High Court had subsequently passed a series of directions, including asking the MCD to undertake an exercise concerning the safety of paying guest (PG) accommodations and hostels.Also read: Ahead of BRICS, Congress recalls 2012 summit where former PM Manmohan Singh proposed development bankAmicus curiae Ajit Kumar told the Supreme Court that the exercise was moving in the right direction, but said it should not appear that the proceedings before the Delhi High Court were confined only to the safety of PG accommodations.He submitted that inspections had been carried out in four areas of Delhi and in Lucknow. The directions passed earlier had covered Lajpat Nagar, Saket, Malviya Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and Ali Ganj in Lucknow.The amicus suggested that the proceedings pending before the Delhi High Court could be transferred to the Supreme Court and tagged with the present proceedings. Alternatively, he submitted that the High Court proceedings could continue, with a report being filed before the Supreme Court in terms of its March 25, 2026 order, particularly paragraphs 6 and 7, and the order dated August 5, 2026.The bench accepted the amicus's suggestion and said it did not wish to disturb the position before the High Court.Also read: SC dismisses gangster Abu Salem's plea seeking release from custody“We do not wish to disturb the position before the High Court. We request them to monitor the case and bring it to a conclusion”, it said.The Supreme Court also clarified that the present proceedings were not confined to the particular areas in Delhi or to Lucknow.The court further directed the Delhi government and the MCD to file their respective reports in connection with the present proceedings. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the Delhi government and the MCD.
