For a year the iPhone 18 Pro carried one expectation above the rest, and it came from outside Apple. Reports from October 2025 onward held that Apple would put full 5G satellite internet into its 2026 phones, using a new in-house modem to reach a standard called NR-NTN. Every one of those accounts came from supply-chain sources and analysts rather than from Apple, which stayed silent on the subject throughout. Analysts still called it a game-changer, and travel writers built upgrade guides around it. The phone arrived on Wednesday with the modem in place and the service missing. Apple's own spec sheet lists every cellular band the iPhone 18 Pro supports. Satellite bands are absent from that list. Under satellite features, the page carries four words: Emergency SOS via satellite. The iPhone 14 launched with that same capability in November 2022. Four years have passed. About $2 billion of Apple money has gone into a satellite firm, and a custom modem programme has run alongside it.
