The AGC filed two notices of appeal to the High Court after British citizen and Singapore permanent resident Oruche Morgan Fidelis, 23, was sentenced to a five-day short detention order and 100 hours of community service. — AFP pic By Malay Mail First Published: Thursday, 10 Sep 2026 1:02 PM MYT SINGAPORE, Sept 10 — Singapore’s Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) will appeal against the reduced charge and sentence imposed on a man who assaulted a private-hire driver, saying the punishment was “manifestly inadequate”.CNA reported that AGC filed two notices of appeal to the High Court after British citizen and Singapore permanent resident Oruche Morgan Fidelis, 23, was sentenced to a five-day short detention order and 100 hours of community service.Fidelis had initially faced a charge of voluntarily causing hurt resulting in grievous hurt, but District Judge John Ng amended it to assault following the trial and convicted him on the lesser charge.The 66-year-old Grab driver, Low Ek Yong, suffered a fractured skull and brain injury after the incident, although it could not be established how exactly the injuries were sustained.Fidelis had consumed alcohol before booking a Grab ride on June 12, 2024, and became angry and pushed Low when the driver tried to wake him after they arrived at the destination.Low died about a year later from heart disease and large bowel obstruction.A conviction for voluntarily causing hurt resulting in grievous hurt carries a maximum jail term of five years, a fine of up to S$10,000 (RM32,200), or both.Assault carries a maximum jail term of three months, a fine of up to S$1,500, or both.AGC said the sentence imposed on Fidelis was “manifestly inadequate” and that its appeals would be heard by the High Court at a later date.Fidelis was represented by lawyers from Withers KhattarWong, led by Shashi Nathan.Offenders given a short detention order do not receive a criminal record after completing their sentence.
