An opening-drive injury to starting quarterback Sam Darnold and a stagnant offense left Seattle in an early hole through three quarters on Wednesday night. Yet a dominant second-half defensive performance, combined with crucial late plays from backup Drew Lock, allowed the Seahawks to cap their Super Bowl banner-raising night with a 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots.Lock directed two late scoring drives in relief, while Seattle’s defense picked off Patriots quarterback Drake Maye three times in the fourth quarter to overcome Darnold’s early exit and secure the win in a Super Bowl rematch."I want to give our team a lot of credit because you know things weren’t really going where we wanted," coach Mike Macdonald said. "We didn’t panic. We still liked our plan. We didn’t need to change what we were doing or anything like that. We just we wanted to stick to what we were doing, and the guys were just really excited to go back out there and play."Seattle was held to a single field goal across the first three quarters as Lock and the offense struggled to move the ball after Darnold suffered a hip injury on the team's initial possession. Macdonald confirmed that initial medical tests indicated Darnold did not break any bones, characterizing the update as "positive."Sam Darnold was forced to leave the game early with a hip issue (Getty)However, three costly fourth-quarter interceptions thrown by Maye — last season’s MVP runner-up — dramatically altered the momentum of the game, ensuring that the championship banner celebration concluded in triumph for the home supporters."We knew coming in, it was going to be a four-quarter game, and that’s and that’s who we are," receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba said. "We’re going to fight. We knew it’s going to be a dogfight, and we love it. Whatever it looks like in the first half, second quarter, like we’re going to make it right. We’re going to keep fighting until the clock hits triple zero. So I was just happy to to see that and to see that continue going forward this year."Despite throwing two earlier picks, Maye successfully drove New England into position to tie the game or take the lead in the final minute. However, defensive back Josh Jobe recorded a toe-tapping interception in the end zone to seal the victory for Seattle."I was trying to get rid of it, and I realized Mack was back there in the back and I didn’t put enough on it to get it out," Maye said. "It was unacceptable."Seattle fell behind 10-0 before converting a field goal in the third quarter. The Seahawks then leveled the score when Lock connected with Smith-Njigba on a 45-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1, following an interception by Nehemiah Pritchett. On New England's next possession, Julian Love intercepted Maye, setting up a 26-yard field goal from Jason Myers to give Seattle a 13-10 lead. That score primed the home defense for its decisive stand on the game's final drive. The contest kicked off following a pregame ceremony featuring the raising of Seattle's Super Bowl banner alongside highlights displayed on the stadium video board. This marked only the third time a Super Bowl rematch has taken place in Week 1, with the previous instance occurring in 2016 when Denver opened its title defense with a victory over Carolina.Drake Maye was picked off three times (Getty)Celebratory energy turned to concern early in the first quarter when Darnold limped off after being sacked on third down by Dre’Mont Jones on the opening drive. Darnold immediately retreated to the sideline medical tent before walking back to the locker room prior to Seattle’s next possession.Lock, who attempted only three passes during the entirety of last season, was thrust into action. Seattle’s attack remained largely dormant until the fourth quarter, but Lock delivered sufficient key throws late to produce a standout moment in a career that has featured limited highlights since Denver selected him in the second round of the 2019 draft. Lock managed just eight victories in three seasons with the Broncos before being traded to Seattle as part of the deal for Russell Wilson. He subsequently spent time as a backup for the New York Giants before re-signing with Seattle last season."It was a blast," Lock said. "So proud of everyone around me tonight on the offensive side of the ball. I can't say enough about the defense turning over the ball."New England’s offense struggled similarly throughout the evening, though the Patriots produced the first half's sole touchdown after Jobe was flagged for pass interference against offseason addition A.J. Brown on a deep flea-flicker attempt. On the very next play, Maye connected with rookie Eli Raridon for a 2-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.A costly penalty also contributed to New England’s second score. Chazz Surratt received a roughing the punter flag on the opening drive of the third quarter, extending the Patriots' possession and setting up Andy Borregales for a 50-yard field goal.
