Liverpool launched their UEFA Champions League campaign with a comeback victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, while Galatasaray suffered the reverse fate as Sporting CP overturned an early deficit to claim a 3-1 win in Lisbon both on Wednesday night.
At Anfield, Liverpool recovered from Marcos Llorente’s first-half opener to beat Atletico 2-1, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister scoring either side of half-time to hand new manager Andoni Iraola a winning start in Europe.
Atletico struck in the 17th minute when Llorente finished after Julián Alvarez had created the opening, giving the visitors an early advantage.
Liverpool responded before the interval, with Szoboszlai levelling in the 40th minute after Ronald Araújo helped keep the move alive inside the Atletico area.
The hosts completed the turnaround five minutes after the restart when Mac Allister drilled a powerful left-footed effort into the corner from around 20 yards after Rio Ngumoha’s work on the left created the opening.
