While we pretended not to be looking, breasts somehow became Republican-coded.Illustration by Fromm StudioI started high school at the beginning of George W. Bush’s first term. There was lots of nervous chatter, I recall, about what sex education would look like for my cohort. The new President’s victory had been propped up, in part, by Christian evangelicals who promoted a culture of sexual purity, accessories included. Across the country, under the banner of “True Love Waits,” teens were encouraged to wear promise rings—symbols of their commitment to remain virgins until marriage—and young celebrities such as the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and Selena Gomez began sporting them. After Bush took office, federal funding was quickly funnelled to “abstinence only” sex-education programs. But, these days, the right is in the midst of a raunchy new rebrand. For this week’s Fall Style & Design Issue, I investigated the cultural forces, including #MeToo and the rise of “Barstool conservatism,” that prompted this realignment and convinced the right that they were bringing sexy back (even as the Trump Administration is also bringing back some of the Bush-era guidelines on sex ed).I interviewed Raquel Debono, the organizer of Make America Hot Again, a mixer series for young conservatives. “Look at Fox News. Everyone’s got Botox, filler, and their tits out,” she told me. “It’s the ‘bimbo-ification of MAGA.” I went lingerie shopping with Brittany Hugoboom, the editor of Evie magazine, the conservative answer to Cosmopolitan. Evie published a sex-themed issue this year, replete with a “blowjob checklist,” and regularly puts out shopping guides for the #MyBodyHisChoice customer, such as “The Valentine’s Lingerie He Hopes You’ll Wear.” I also visited Stagecoach, a country-music festival near Palm Springs that’s known as the conservative Coachella (or simply “Trumpchella”), where the “Euphoria” actress, and registered Republican, Sydney Sweeney, hosted a pop-up for SYRN, her sultry new lingerie line. At the SYRN Saloon, I ordered a Made You Look margarita from the bar, where two tip jars sat, one labelled “Titties,” the other “Ass”—and spied a young man in a T-shirt that read D.I.L.F. (Damn I Love Freedom) in the colors of the American flag. Call it impurity culture.Photograph by Ohad Zwigenberg / Pool / AFP / GettyNew reporting from Haaretz shows that, before October 7th, the Israeli Prime Minister was told to expect an “earthquake” from Gaza—and didn’t inform his security chiefs.
