Who else but Martin Odegaard? Arsenal’s captain again spurred his team to victory as his second-half strike proved decisive in a deserved win over Napoli in their opening game of this season’s Champions League.Arsenal should’ve won by a bigger margin. By the end of the game, Mikel Arteta’s men had recorded 26 shots, their most on record in a Champions League match (since the 2003-04 season).Though the first half was goalless, Arsenal dominated and had had 13 shots.But only three of those were on target and many players should have have done better: Mikel Merino headed straight at Napoli goalkeeper, Alex Meret, early in the game; and Bukayo Saka shot high when delightfully put through by Odegaard just before the break.The misses continued in the second half. Soon after the restart, Arteta had his hands on his head as Piero Hincapie directed the ball over the crossbar from just a few yards out. With the chances and possession — Arsenal were at over 70 per cent possession around the hour mark — it felt the breakthrough would, and should, come.It was fitting that Odegaard, Arsenal’s best performer on the night and this season so far, broke the deadlock with his shot from the edge of the box.The Athletic’s Amy Lawrence and Jack Lang break down the key talking points.How impressive was Odegaard?There was nothing on. He was faced by a blue wall. No, sorry: two walls. Possibly three. Napoli were camped inside their own penalty area, tortoise-shelling, daring Arsenal to batter their way through.Odegaard is not a man for brute force. He studied the scene, deciphered it. Then, with a little scoop of his left foot, he played the pass of the evening — in this match or in any other. The ball floated over the Napoli defence, a leaf on the breeze. It was clever. It was gorgeous. It landed on Ben White’s head. Only Hincapie’s wayward finish, a second later, ruined things.It was one of those Odegaard moments on one of those Odegaard nights, when the Norwegian just seems to have a bit more time, sees things more clearly than anyone else. Earlier, he had nudged a lovely pass into Saka’s path with almost shrugging ease. The feeling was only confirmed by his winning goal, just when it appeared that Arsenal might end the night frustrated. As he ran to the corner, understandably elated, you could almost see the personal tribulations of the last couple of seasons disappearing into the rear-view.Arteta and Arsenal’s fans will be delighted to have him looking so fit, so in the groove.
