OpenAI says ChatGPT now has more than 900 million weekly active users, a milestone that places the service among the most widely used AI products in everyday work and personal computing. The company disclosed the figure in late February 2026 alongside new user metrics and a $110 billion investment round, highlighting the scale of demand it says is reshaping how people first engage with AI.
For businesses, the number matters less as a popularity contest than as evidence of changing user behavior. When a tool reaches this level of regular use, familiarity with conversational AI becomes more common among customers, employees and prospective hires. That does not make every AI use case worthwhile, but it raises the practical value of deciding where AI can improve a specific workflow or customer interaction.
ChatGPT's growth in context
OpenAI reported the milestone in its official Scaling AI for everyone announcement. The company also said that more than 50 million consumer subscribers and over 9 million paying business users rely on ChatGPT for work or personal use. Separately, it reported 1.6 million weekly Codex users.
These figures describe different parts of OpenAI's reported user base and should not be treated as mutually exclusive categories. They do, however, show that ChatGPT's reach extends beyond occasional consumer experimentation into paid individual and workplace use.
