The situation in the Persian Gulf is going from bad to worse, with hostilities aggravating and oil rates soaring internationally. Worries about a permanent problem at the Strait of Hormuz spread across the globe and their impact was felt on Wednesday at Athinon Avenue, which was coming off four straight days of index growth. Nevertheless, the momentum of the local market remains intact, containing the losses of the benchmark to a minimum on the day.

The Euronext Athens (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,701.69 points, shedding 0.18% from Tuesday’s 2,706.65 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index contracted 0.17% to end at 6,919.05 points.

The banks index declined 1.14%, as National dropped 1.79%, Bank of Cyprus gave up 1.42%, Piraeus conceded 1.26%, Eurobank shrunk 1.20%, Alpha shied 0.42% and Credia Bank parted with 0.41%, while Optima advanced 2.11%.

In total, 40 stocks secured gains, 64 showed losses and 19 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to €429.6 million, up from Tuesday’s €243.3 million.
