Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google, is once again playing a prominent role in the company he helped build, as Alphabet intensifies its battle for leadership in artificial intelligence.
Brin, who no longer holds an executive position at Google or its parent company Alphabet, has become involved in the development of Gemini, Google’s flagship artificial intelligence model.
His renewed involvement comes as Google faces fierce competition from OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies.
Reuters reported in August that Brin had been urging Google DeepMind employees to increase work on Gemini and close the gap with competing AI models.
He has pushed the company towards areas such as coding and recursive self-improvement, where AI systems could potentially improve their own capabilities.
