Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has backed Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian to play an important role for the club throughout the season, praising the teenager’s attitude and mentality ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United.
The 19-year-old has had to remain patient during the opening weeks of the campaign, having yet to start a Premier League match.
However, Estevao impressed when given a starting opportunity in Chelsea’s previous Carabao Cup fixture against Luton Town and has also made notable contributions as a substitute.
His latest cameo came in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, when he came close to securing an equaliser late in the game, forcing goalkeeper David Raya into an excellent reaction save.
