Republican New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino lashed out at Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday, bashing him over his signing of two executive orders related to 9/11, a mayoral action she claimed was a “total absolute farce.”Mamdani, whose orders establish the anniversary of the attacks as an annual “Citywide Day of Remembrance and Service” and modernize the city’s emergency preparedness procedures, has been facing backlash from conservatives, including a number of family members of 9/11 victims, ahead of his planned attendance at a memorial event on Friday.He caught more fury after the signing ceremony, where his chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem, who once represented a convicted al Qaeda member, was present. Mamdani passed the pen used for the signing to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who then handed it to Kassem.“Everything he does is planned out,” Paladino, a vocal opponent of the mayor, told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on Tuesday. The New York City councilwoman called the signing and transfer of the pen to Kassem “a very cryptic message” and urged “New Yorkers to wake up.” “Did you ever think in a million years that we would be standing on the steps of City Hall with the families of 9/11, the survivors of the 9/11 tragedy, sacred ground, and this guy is trying his best to try to fool us again?” she asked. “You’re not going to get away with this. I’m telling you, this was symbolism. It was cryptic, but it was a message,” Paladino lashed out. “I hate to even say this, Laura, but you know it’s a message to Osama bin Laden that, look, ‘We conquered New York.’ That’s how scary all of this really is to each and every one of us,” she continued. “New Yorkers need to wake up.”Mamdani’s leadership has recently received high marks, according to a new Suffolk University poll released Tuesday. About 61% of those surveyed said they believe he has done a better job than expected. However, Paladino disagreed. “He’s not surveying people like myself, average middle white working-class people,” she said. “He is tending his nest with these young people,” the councilwoman said. “You know, everybody has control over the pollings that they do, and he’s certainly a good example of how he does that. He has manipulated a base of people, and he’s not giving up.”
