A luxury handbag can complete a look, but could your spine quietly be paying the ultimate price? While many of us can’t leave the house without a bag slung over our shoulder, experts warn that overloading it or wearing the wrong style for your body could put serious pressure on your body and trigger a chain of postural problems.Dr Sherry McAllister is a doctor of chiropractic and President of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress. She warns that hauling heavy totes over one shoulder or dangling them from the forearm forces the body into unnatural positions, which could lead to lasting physical damage and pain.‘A handbag adds an external load to your frame,’ she says. ‘When that load hangs from one shoulder or one hand, the body subtly adapts: a lifted shoulder here, a shifted trunk there, a quiet rotation through the pelvis.‘These are normal short-term adjustments, not evidence that one afternoon with a tote has ruined your posture. But heavier weight, longer carrying time and repeated asymmetry increase the physical demand on your body.’ Chiropractors warn that continued, long-term wear of heavy bags can cause lasting physical damage and pain.Dr McAllister says that studies involving young adults found that even a 2.7-kilogram bag changed trunk positioning. She says, ‘A single-shoulder carry increased thoracic rounding, while cross-body carriage increased both upper-back curve and lower-back sway. Researchers also noted shifts in shoulder-blade position, shoulder symmetry and pelvic rotation.’Another study compared backpacks, shoulder bags and handheld handbags of equal weight. The handheld bag created the greatest compressive force through the muscles supporting the spine. The backpack created the lowest burden because it distributes the load symmetrically – when worn correctly using both straps. But Dr McAllister says you don’t need to sacrifice luxury style to save your back, and certain celebrities are already paving the way with ergonomically savvy choices.Kendall Jenner: Streamlined and centredKendall Jenner is often spotted out and about with sleek, structured crossbody bags from high-end labels including The Row and Bottega Veneta. Kendall Jenner typically wears structured, crossbody bags from high-end brands.Dr McAllister says, ‘She wears them high and close to her body – a clever hands-free style that permits a natural arm swing while keeping her shoulders perfectly level. Her minimal street style proves a centred bag can enhance comfort and movement without sacrificing fashion credentials.’Harry Styles: Gender-free practicalityHarry Styles regularly champions structured handbags and crossbody silhouettes, including his iconic Gucci Jackie 1961 worn neatly at his side.‘Harry’s functional fashion highlights how hands-free styles suit everyone. By centring the load, he prevents the awkward trunk rotation and uneven muscle recruitment caused by heavy briefcases or fat wallets stuffed into back pockets.’ Harry Styles wears functional crossbody bags that centre the load.Dr McAllister says that chiropractors recommend protecting your posture by starting with the lightest bag that fits your daily schedule.‘A compact silhouette naturally deters “just-in-case” overpacking.’Crossbody bags feel secure, but the strap matters. Choose a wider strap, keep the bag close to your body and avoid letting it swing low, which can disrupt gait and increase lower-back demand. For totes and top-handle bags, lighten the contents and switch sides regularly.‘Every once in a while, especially when you start feeling the strain, empty your handbag into a plastic bag and place it on a scale. The number you see may shock you and could explain why your commute feels heavier than it should.‘Cosmetics, chargers, water bottles, wallets, keys, books, laptops and snacks all add load, and your body carries every gram.’Dr McAllister says that this daily stress can present itself as recurring neck, shoulder or lower-back discomfort, tingling, strap marks, or a feeling of being forced to lean or shift your gait. Daily stress can cause recurring neck, shoulder and lower-back discomfort. If you recognise these symptoms, she says consulting a specialist can help address the problem before it becomes a long-term issue.‘A doctor of chiropractic can assess posture in motion, joint function, muscle balance and everyday habits that contribute to discomfort,’ she says. ‘Care may include individualised exercise, ergonomic changes, and alignment of structure and function.’Rather than demanding you surrender your favourite designer bag, a chiropractor can help tailor your choices to match your daily life.‘Instead of asking you to ditch your handbag, a chiropractor can help you choose a different style better suited to your daily needs and offer advice on how to balance fashion and function best,’ she says.‘That is the adjusted reality way of living. Paying attention to what your body is telling you before a small daily stressor becomes a larger limitation. Your bag should carry your essentials, and your body should carry the beauty of your fashion choices.’
