Dr Matthew Wise, Head of Strategy for the Service business at ABB Electrification, opened his keynote at Sustainability LIVE: The London Summit with a cautionary tale.
He described a night at an LNG facility in Southeast Asia which began like many others, but that ended in catastrophe.
It was a typical hot and humid evening, the night shift workers were arriving in good spirits and the plant’s machinery was whirring peacefully.
“The calmness of it belied what was about to happen,” Matthew explained.
That night, a busbar connected to one of the generator’s switchgears overheated. It was two decades old and had deteriorated after years of use.
