Congress legislator Ramya Haridas, at the centre of a controversy over her late-night fracas at the home of a party worker at Chirayankeezhu here last week, gave her statement to former KPCC president M.M. Hassan, who is heading a three-member committee probing the incident that caused significant reputational damage to the United Democratic Front (UDF) government, at Indira Bhavan on Wednesday.“I gave the M.M. Hassan commission an honest account of what transpired and the circumstances that precipitated the incident. I hope and believe the commission will reach a just conclusion,” Ms. Haridas told reporters.Earlier, Ms Haridas wrote on Facebook that she “would always be in Chirayankeezhu” along with a video of her victory lap after the Assembly elections. Notably, several Congress leaders, including KPCC president Sunny Joseph, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan and Women and Child Welfare Minister Bindu Krishna, said the party had taken the episode seriously. So far, no Congress leader has come out in Ms. Haridas’ defence publicly. Mr. Hassan later told reporters that the commission would submit its findings to Mr Joseph. When asked whether the KPCC viewed the matter as a serious infringement of party discipline and also the responsibilities that come with parliamentary privilege, Mr. Hassan replied: “If the party did not view the incident with gravity, it would not have tapped me to head the inquiry. He said the commission had given a full hearing to those involved. “The commission’s task ends when the report is submitted. The KPCC will take the final call,” he added. Notably, Ms. Haridas is a KPCC vice-president and member of the organisation’s apex political affairs committee (PAC). A Congress insider said the KPCC was likely to refer the matter to All India Congress Committee general secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal, MP, given her track record.
