TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An avalanche struck a group of mountaineers on Mount Mizhirgi in Russia’s North Caucasus on Sunday, September 6. At least 11 hikers have died, and six others remain missing.As reported by People, an avalanche hit the Kabardino-Balkaria region at around 5 p.m. local time, sweeping through a group of 33 hikers who were on a scheduled mountain tour. Six hikers were also reported injured. Ten hikers had managed to descend the mountain on their own by the next morning at 9 a.m. Rescue teams continued searching for six people whose whereabouts remained unknown. More than 50 rescue workers were involved in the search in the Bezengi Gorge. Difficult terrain and the threat of additional avalanches made the operation challenging.A larger rescue team was expected to arrive by helicopter at an alpine camp on Tuesday, September 8, weather permitting. Mount Mizhirgi rises more than 16,000 feet at both its eastern and western summits.
