British Columbia Premier David Eby on Tuesday made clear that President Donald Trump has zero jurisdiction over Canada, unveiling cheeky new signs during a press conference that will be displayed in his province along border crossings with the Pacific Northwest.Eby revealed the signage amid an escalating trade war with America started by Trump, who has frequently floated annexing or buying Canada as the 51st state. Last month, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on about $28 billion worth of Canadian goods after the nations failed to reach a trade agreement. Canada launched retaliatory levies that went into effect Tuesday.“Welcome to B.C., Canada. Strong, proud and never the 51st state. Sorry!” Eby said, reading the sign at its unveiling. “This is a uniquely Canadian message. It’s confident, good humor, and it’s unmistakably clear: British Columbia is part of Canada and Canada is not for sale.”The actual sign was standing onstage beside him and was even more emphatic, as “British Columbia” was spelled out for irrefutable clarity and “NEVER” was capitalized. Other unveiled signs hilariously warned “Watch for Moose” and plainly stated “Kindness ≠ Weakness.”“The road ahead is not easy,” Eby said during the presentation in Victoria. “And while we’ll continue building new opportunities, there is no getting around the fact that people will lose their jobs and businesses will close on both sides of the border. That is the unfortunate reality of Trump’s trade war.”He continued, “And that’s why today ... we’re all asking British Columbians, my colleagues and I, to do what we always do in moments when our neighbors are in distress: We have to look out for one another. We have to buy Canadian whenever we can.”Trump vowed ahead of his 2024 reelection to boost the U.S. economy. He claimed last year that his sweeping international tariffs would revive American manufacturing. Trump Memorial” — above the restroom facility at a popular hiking trail. The city reportedly took the sign down Sunday evening after learning of the stunt.The prank was rather apt, as Trump’s approval rating has continued to proverbially go down the toilet and the president has an incessant penchant for slapping his name on various landmarks. Trump also recently declared he was renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”The president further posted an AI-generated image Sunday depicting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the ground during a hockey game with Trump — and a map of the North American continent on Monday painting Canada as part of the U.S.“All I can say is that the president is clearly unhinged,” Eby said. “Those memes are bizarre.”He added: “They are not benefiting the leader of the world’s largest economy, the world’s largest army ... and it also tells me that as Canadians, if we want to have predictability, if we want to have stability, we need to have a diversified trade relationship around the world. We need to be our own best customers, and that is what today’s message is all about.”
