Ireland’s media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, said it has opened a formal investigation into X, formerly Twitter, over concerns that the platform does not do enough to prevent children from accessing harmful materials, and the effectiveness of its parental controls.
The regulator said it is probing platform’s parental controls, given that X allows adult-only content while permitting children under the age of 16 to use its service.
It said there are concerns that the controls have minimum requirements, are difficult to locate, and are not brought to the attention of new users.
The regulator has the power to apply a fine of up to 10 percent of a company’s “relevant annual turnover” under Ireland’s online safety regulations.
The code requires age assurance so that children are prevented from seeing videos “depicting pornography or extreme/gross and gratuitous violence or acts of cruelty”, the Coimisiún na Meán said in a statement.
