India’s electric mobility journey showcases the scale and speed of transformation under the leadership of the PM Narendra Modi, Minister of Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy, said on Wednesday.Commenting on the World EV Day, he informed that 1.01 crore+ electric vehicles (EVs) have been sold in India to date. He said the MHI is driving this transition through schemes like Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) and other interventions that strengthen India’s electric mobility ecosystem.Around 28.63 lakh EVs have been supported under the Scheme, in which 25.88 lakh were electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and 2.75 lakh electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws). Annual EV sales have also risen from 2,322 in FY2014-15 to 25.45 lakh in FY 2025-26, he added.Mobility sectorIndia’s electric mobility sector is gathering unprecedented momentum, with July 2026 recording an all-time high of 3,27,901 EV sales, a 66 per cent jump over the previous year.According to monthly data shared by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Tuesday, August 2026 was also the best-ever August for electric mobility, across categories, reaching 2,98,448 units, up 53 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y), taking overall EV penetration to 12.3 per cent, from 9.5 per cent a year ago.FADA said nearly one in every eight vehicles sold was electric now.Meanwhile, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and sectoral leaders have urged the government to accelerate battery incentives, smart grid development, and last-mile mobility to speed up EV adoption in the country.Rapid EV adoptionThe IESA, in a statement on World EV Day, said that to sustain India’s rapid EV adoption and unlock its next phase of growth, smart-grid infrastructure and expanded battery incentives are critical enablers.IESA Managing Director Vinayak Walimbe said that the proposed incentive scheme for domestic battery components is a visionary step towards nurturing upstream capabilities such as cathode, anode, and separator manufacturing. The government must accelerate this momentum by supporting R&D collaboration, strategic mineral development, and workforce skill-building, he added. While battery manufacturing incentives are vital, sector experts underline that success will ultimately depend on building a smart, future-ready grid capable of supporting mass electrification.Published on September 9, 2026
