A jet-propelled Russian war drone penetrated at least 50 kilometers (31 miles) into NATO-defended airspace over Romania and flew there for about a half an hour before being lost by alliance radars and returning unmolested to Moldova, Romanian and Moldovan news and official sources reported on Wednesday. The Russian military aircraft’s extended violation of Atlantic Alliance airspace took place on Tuesday afternoon as NATO was running a massive air surveillance and defense exercise nearby with fighters, air tankers and AWACS air surveillance planes from at least six NATO member states participating.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. Notwithstanding the beefed-up NATO air presence in the region and two Romanian F-16 fighter jets launched specifically to intercept the encroaching Russian robot plane, the drone was not interfered by NATO air and ground forces and ended its combat sortie by blowing up in a Moldovan farm field. The seemingly unimpeded excursion by the Russian Air Force strike drone into and out of Romanian airspace came in the wake of a July 30 penetration by a Russian cruise missile over Poland. In that incident a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile that had been tracked by Ukrainian air defenses for more than two hours flew across central and western Ukraine and approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) into Poland, before impacting the ground and without interception by NATO forces. As the training was in progress, a Russian attack drone violated Romanian airspace about 200 kilometers to the north. Fighters participating in the exercise were some 15-20 minutes’ away from the violation, however, according to news reports they did not divert.
