Some real-estate stories are about more than square footage or price. The California ranch belonging to the film director James Cameron is one such example. According to a Forbes report, the Oscar-winning film director purchased a 102-acre property on the Gaviota Coast of Santa Barbara County in 1999 for $4.375 million. Twenty-four years later, in July 2023, Cameron listed the ranch for $33 million.The property sits along the Pacific coastline within Hollister Ranch, a 14,000-acre rural residential subdivision and working cattle ranch that was divided into 136 parcels in 1971. The ranch encompasses about 8.5 miles of shoreline, including several beaches. For Cameron, the ranch served as more than a getaway. Forbes reported that he wrote most of the first Avatar script and about half of the next two instalments there, spending months at a time working in the upper library of the house or in the guest house.Family was what determined the rest of the narrative. After acquiring the property, the couple soon decided to sell the house in Malibu and relocate to the more peaceful environment of the coast of Santa Barbara. In 2012, the Camerons adopted a plant-based lifestyle, a choice that aligned with their land stewardship and environmental values.A home tailored to raise a family and pursue artThe main house is 8,000 square feet with five bedrooms, plus a 2,000-square-foot guesthouse set on higher ground to maximise ocean views. Forbes detailed how, after moving in, the Camerons removed the carpets and installed slabs of Rocky Mountain quartzite, giving the floors cream, gold, and rust tones. At the same time, the Brazilian hardwood beams of the main living room are stripped of paint and polished.The kitchen and dining area hold many of the family’s everyday memories, centred on a sugar maple butcher-block table and a dining room that seats 14, with additional outdoor space for larger gatherings. The primary suite continues the same style with oak flooring and fabric touches inspired by Bali, part of the Indonesian design elements found throughout the home. One unusual detail in the living room is an 800-pound stone head, a gift from the late actor Bill Paxton that was originally taken from a hotel facade in New York.In addition to the residence, the ranch features a 24,000-square-foot equestrian complex, two barns, a tennis court, and a currently permitted helipad. One barn was large enough to store helicopters and could also serve as a workshop for Cameron as he built submersibles and other robotics for deep-sea expeditions, including a solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.Living off the grid without compromising comfortWhat made the ranch unique was that it generated its own power and produced much of its own food. The house ran on a fully off-grid system with solar panels, a wind turbine, and ample battery storage. The Forbes article said the property also had a quarter-acre garden with about 150 crops, enough to feed several dozen people at a time and stock the pantry for lean periods. That level of self-sufficiency reflected the couple’s long experience with environmental work before they built the ranch.
