India’s high-altitude Union Territory of Ladakh recorded more tourist arrivals in the first eight months of 2026 than during the whole of last year, highlighting a sharp surge in travel to the Himalayan region. Ladakh received 4,05,000 visitors between January and August this year, surpassing the 3,35,000 tourists recorded during the whole of 2025 by 20.61 per cent, according to figures shared by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena in a post on X.Tourist arrivals during the January-August period were 50.37 per cent higher than the 2,69,000 visitors recorded during the corresponding period last year, the figures showed.The growth accelerated in August, with Ladakh recording 74,753 tourist arrivals compared with 45,201 in August 2025, an increase of 65.38 per cent.Foreign TouristsForeign tourist arrivals also rose sharply. The cold desert received 33,346 foreign visitors during January-August 2026, compared with 25,082 during the same period last year, marking an increase of 32.95 per cent.The sharp rise in visitor numbers also comes amid growing attention on the environmental pressures associated with mass tourism in the ecologically fragile Himalayan region.Saxena attributed the growth to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting domestic tourism, infrastructure development and the Centre’s tourism policies in Ladakh.The surge comes as the administration seeks to promote Ladakh as a year-round destination rather than one largely dependent on the peak summer tourism season.“I reaffirm our commitment to building a sustainable, responsible, and year-round tourism economy in Ladakh,” Saxena said.Off-season TourismThe administration is promoting festivals and events during the off-season to extend the tourism season and create more sustained livelihood opportunities for local communities, including youth, artisans and homestay operators, he said.The strategy is also intended to offer visitors a less crowded and more affordable experience, said Saxena.Ladakh, known for its rugged mountains, Buddhist monasteries and high-altitude landscapes, has become a major destination for domestic and international travellers. Tourism is an important source of income for local businesses, including hotels, homestays, transport operators, restaurants and handicraft sellers.Promoting off-season tourism could help distribute tourist activity more evenly across the year while reducing pressure during peak months, the administration has said.Saxena appealed to travellers to explore Ladakh’s landscape and culture, while calling for a sustainable and responsible approach to tourism.Published on September 9, 2026
