Former nurse Lucy Waring, 48, and her husband Jon, 58, returned to the hospital where she used to work to help paint the dementia unit - just 12 months after bagging £3.9m on the Lottery13:22, 09 Sep 2026Lotto winner Lucy Waring has celebrated her brush with good fortune - by painting the hospital ward where she used to work.‌The former nurse, 48, and her husband Jon, 58, returned to Torbay Hospital, Devon, to create lasting artwork to comfort patients on its dementia unit. The couple, from Paignton, bagged a £3.9million Lotto Jackpot in 2025 and instantly packed in their jobs.‌But Lucy picked up her paintbrush to go back to the unit where she spent the final phase of her 27-year career as a nurse. The couple also donated a piano to the ward, where volunteers often play music for the staff and dementia patients.‌Jon, a former police radio operator, who would frequently find himself engaging with members of the community with dementia, said: “Returning to Torbay Hospital means the world to both of us."Lucy gave so much of herself to this hospital and to these patients over the years. Being able to come back and leave something permanent - artwork that will bring comfort and familiarity to people living with dementia is just wonderful. We hope it brings many smiles.”‌Lucy added: “The dementia unit will always hold such a special place in my heart. These patients and the incredible staff who care for them deserve everything. We are so proud to be part of this.”Jon discovered he had won the lottery on May 31 last year when he woke up and checked his phone. Since then the couple have splashed out a new car – an Audi Q7 – a Harley Davidson Trike and a hot tub.‌They moved from their two-bedroom bungalow to a seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom detached house with a pool, tennis court, bar, sauna and 3.7 acres of land. They gave away about £430,000 to family and friends and invested the remaining £1.5m so it could provide an income for the rest of their lives.They were joined by seven National Lottery winners when they went back to Torbay Hospital. They included Taryn and Grants Hawkes from Cornwall, who won £1m on the Lotto, as well Ruth and Peter Doyle from Wiltshire, who won £1m on the EuroMillions.‌Jenn Burston from Devon, who won £3m on the Lotto, and Natalie and Andrew Symes from south Gloucestershire, who won £1m on the EuroMillions, also gave their time to help bring the project to life.Stephen Heath, Director of Nursing for Medicine, said: “We’re delighted we were chosen by the winners to give back to, having a nice space for our patients to come and eat, play games or listen to music does so much for their recovery.”Since the start of the year, Lotto has already made over 100 millionaires.
