The Edmonton Oilers spent the summer fixing long-standing cap issues, addressing immediate team needs and getting younger at important roster spots. As training camp arrives, injuries have turned an attractive offseason of work into an uneasy fall. Still, with new coach Mike Babcock on board and two of the best players in the NHL to lead the way, fans are in a generally good mood.The injury to young winger Matt Savoie highlights a problem for the team. The skill lines have quality but lack depth. An obvious replacement for Savoie is young winger Ike Howard, but he lacks experience. There is a window to find a veteran before opening night. Which brings us to a question no serious Oilers fan would have entertained before the Savoie news. Is it possible the Oilers make a trade before the regular season begins?Opportunistic BowmanThe most important piece could break loose over the next few weeks. The Oilers need another impact player. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman has some advantages. The team’s cap situation is much improved (or will be when injured players return), there are assets of value that can be dealt and it appears there will be some quality available for acquisition in the immediate future.Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and Detroit Red Wings centre Dylan Larkin are reportedly available, but problematic for Bowman. The Oilers have added three new goaltenders (Tristan Jarry, Frederik Andersen and Devon Levi) in the last 12 months, and none of them has had an opportunity to show what they can do when healthy. It would be foolish to check down from a solution before giving it a full try.Larkin, 30, carries an $8.7 million contract and won’t be a free agent until 2031. Bowman just got out from under a massive long-term contract (Darnell Nurse), and should avoid another with an aging (albeit substantial) talent. This also applies to a free-agent acquisition like free-agent winger Vladimir Tarasenko, who (incredibly) remains a free agent at this time.The ideal course for Bowman is a younger player approaching peak output. Kirill Marchenko of the Columbus Blue Jackets ($3.85 million and an RFA next summer) would be a far more attractive target for this season and beyond. If Marchenko, 26, is available in the coming weeks, Bowman should move heaven and earth to get him. It’s important to note that another team could outbid the Oilers, but the template for an impact trade is contained in a deal for Marchenko.Young, skilled, playing this season on a reasonable contract. That’s enormous value to the Edmonton franchise. The Quinn Hughes trade happened in mid-December; it could be a similar timeline for Marchenko.
