As a lifelong NFL Draft obsessive, I’ve always tried to keep two separate sets of annual team rankings.The first focuses on the best teams in the country, those that are the most well-coached, disciplined, consistent and mentally tough. That list features favorites to win a national title. The second is about the most talented rosters in the country.Here’s my look at the latter — the 12 most talented teams based on 2027 NFL Draft potential.Power Rankings: Why the Seahawks aren't No. 1Chad Graff1. Notre DameNot only is Notre Dame’s roster loaded with potential premium talent, such as out-of-this-world cornerback Leonard Moore and quarterback CJ Carr, but the Irish arguably have more depth of talent than anyone else.The secondary alone is one of the most gifted we’ve seen in some time. Moore is the best cornerback prospect since Sauce Gardner — and he might be better when it’s all over; Brauntae Johnson is among the more athletic, explosive, hybrid-style safeties in the country; and Adon Shuler, a two-time captain, is a fearless downhill DB. Add DJ McKinney and Christian Gray, and that’s five potential top-100 players for the 2027 draft in Notre Dame’s secondary alone.Linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, DT Francis Brewu and OL Anthonie Knapp are also names to watch. This might be the deepest roster Notre Dame has had in a generation.2. Ohio StateThe Buckeyes have had the best player in college football the past two years in superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith, one of the ultra-rare receiver prospects actually talented enough to be considered with the No. 1 pick — even with all the potential QB talent in this class. Ohio State’s top defensive prospect, 6-foot-5, 260-pound edge Kenyatta Jackson Jr., would’ve been drafted somewhere in 2026 but is now one of the top pass rush prospects in the 2027 class.In total, there are at least nine Buckeyes with top-100 potential for 2027: Smith, Jackson, OL Austin Siereveld, OL Luke Montgomery, QB Julian Sayin, DB Jaylen McClain, DB Earl Little Jr. and WR Devin McCuin. Don’t rule out DB Terry Moore, either.3. TexasTexas has the most premium talent in the country, with a total of four players ranked in my preseason top 10: WR Cam Coleman (No. 4), edge Colin Simmons (No. 5), OT Trevor Goosby (No. 8) and QB Arch Manning (No. 10). Notre Dame and Ohio State have deeper rosters in terms of 2027 draft talent, but not by much.Safety Jelani McDonald (6-2, 194) has serious hybrid potential, and the Longhorns have two running backs with pro potential in Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown. Ryan Wingo, who opened the year with seven catches for 121 yards and a touchdown against Texas State, is another potential top-100 prospect. This is Steve Sarkisian’s most talented squad since he’s been at Texas.4. OregonDante Moore will be in a battle with Manning for QB1 — and the No. 1 pick — all season long. His season opener against Boise State was impressive; he quickly adjusted to a new play caller before taking over the game and securing a win.TE Jamari Johnson (6-4, 245) has first-round potential and plenty of freakish traits, and WR Evan Stewart is still one of the fastest players in the country.Defensively, Oregon’s front is as good as it gets in college football, with edges Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti complementing tackles A’Mauri Washington and Bear Alexander. All four players have top-100 potential.5. LSUJunior tight end Trey’Dez Green is not only TE1 for 2027, he’s one of the best offensive skill prospects in the class. The 6-foot-6, 238-pounder is basically a gigantic receiver who isn’t afraid to put his hand in the dirt and block. With great burst off the ball and at the top of his routes, Green sinks and bends like a smaller athlete, plus he has gigantic mitts and the biggest catch radius in this class. He’s this year’s version of Kenyon Sadiq.Elsewhere, OT Jordan Seaton, safety Ty Benefield and QB Sam Leavitt were in my preseason top 50. I’m a bit higher than some on Leavitt right now, based mostly on potential and what I believe to be a terrific fit with Lane Kiffin. He had some outstanding moments with Arizona State two years ago and could have a big 2026.6. Ole MissEvery time I watch Trinidad Chambliss, I like him more. (Unrelated: His “EA Sports College Football 27” commercial with Vince Vaughn was the best ad I saw during opening weekend.)Chambliss is small — there’s a fair chance he measures below 6 feet at the combine. But he’s also unique. He and Carr might have the most instinctive feel for the position in this class. He’s so quick with his eyes, the ball explodes off his hands, and he doesn’t miss much. If he has a gigantic year, someone will flirt with him at the bottom of Round 1, despite his warts.Even better news for Ole Miss? He’s not their best prospect. Kewan Lacy is my RB1 for 2027; Will Echoles is DT1. Hybrid box defender Suntarine Perkins (6-1, 216) is one of the rarer defenders in this class — he picked up three pressures and a sack in Week 1.7. GeorgiaAs usual, Kirby Smart’s roster is filled with high-level defensive talent, led by corner Ellis Robinson IV and safety KJ Bolden, two players with first-round potential. In a class filled with big, athletic safeties, the more average-sized Bolden (6-0, 190) is probably the smartest DB of the group. He is a true table-setter with positional versatility on the back end.Junior linebacker Chris Cole might have the most potential of anyone on the roster, because the 6-foot-3, 235-pounder is a traits-heavy, front-seven hybrid with freakish athleticism. He’s a bit raw and untested, but he’s also still growing and hasn’t come close to his ceiling. Others to watch: TE Lawson Luckie, RB Nate Frazier, LB Raylen Wilson and edge Gabe Harris.8. South CarolinaFreaky junior edge Dylan Stewart could challenge Moore to be the top-ranked defender in the class — the 6-foot-5, 245-pounder has all sorts of length, burst and twitch off the edge. Stewart is a potential NFL game-wrecker who has the athleticism and power to line up pretty much anywhere in the box. He could blossom into a truly dominant pass rusher.Supremely talented 6-foot-3, 245-pound QB LaNorris Sellers is back for his senior year with a new offensive coordinator (Kendal Briles). Sellers has all the tools: a cannon for an arm, speed, IQ and size. If the rest of this offense (including OT Jacarrius Peak and WR Nyck Harbor) support him, Sellers has first-round potential.The Gamecocks also have Vicari Swain, one of the country’s top safety prospects.9. IndianaNew QB Josh Hoover is a very accomplished college passer. He’s physically a step down from Fernando Mendoza, but his supporting cast is more talented than last year’s national title team. Charlie Becker was one of the most underrated players in America last season — a 6-foot-3, 207-pound receiver with elite speed and body control who can play all three spots. The Hoosiers added another freakish WR from the portal: 6-foot-3, 213-pound junior Nick Marsh.The Hoosiers also brought back top 100 OT Carter Smith, who will probably be a guard at the next level.10. AlabamaAlabama’s top prospect for 2027 is Yhonzae Pierre, a fourth-year edge who had his breakout last year with a 45-pressure, eight-sack season. He plays as hard as any defender in America, impacting all three downs, and had a pick-six against East Carolina in Week 1.Elsewhere defensively, safety Bray Hubbard and corner Zabien Brown have a chance to crack the top 100.Junior receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is one of the most difficult players to slot right now. He is one of the most talented offensive players in America but weighs barely 170 pounds and has been very unreliable with his hands. He had multiple drops in the opener after having 10 last year and seven as a true freshman.11. MiamiDarian Mensah is the early favorite to be the quarterback who gained the most this offseason via transfer, because his fit with Shannon Dawson’s Miami offense is nearly perfect. His 27-for-30, 401-yard, five-touchdown passing performance in the opener at Stanford was a work of art. (By the way, WR Malachi Toney is easily one of the best players in America, but he’s just a sophomore and, thus, not yet draft-eligible.)Running back Mark Fletcher Jr., a 6-foot-1, 226-pound hammer, is an underrated ball carrier nationally, and former Missouri edge Damon Wilson II has top-60 potential.12. ClemsonThe Tigers were embarrassed by LSU in their season opener, but a lack of talent had nothing to do with it. Defensively, Clemson had three players in my preseason top 50: LB Sammy Brown, CB Ashton Hampton and edge Will Heldt.I also had WR Bryant Wesco in my top 50, and fellow WR TJ Moore at least had a case, too.Just missed the cut: Oklahoma, Penn State, Florida, Michigan, USC, BYU, Tennessee, Kentucky, Auburn, Texas A&M, Texas Tech
