The future of a widely used PostgreSQL backup and recovery tool became uncertain after its sole corporate funding source disappeared, leaving its lead maintainer to support the project without financial backing for a year.

A group of companies, including open-source database developer and support firm Percona, has since stepped in to sponsor pgBackRest, creating a vendor-neutral funding arrangement intended to support its continued development.

The sponsorship arrangement announced in May 2026 provides funding for continued maintenance and development of pgBackRest, which thousands of PostgreSQL deployments rely on to protect production data. The episode highlights a persistent issue across enterprise open source: critical infrastructure projects can depend on one or two maintainers and a single source of financial support.

Funding Loss Puts pgBackRest at Risk

Percona CEO Peter Farkas said the threat of losing pgBackRest exposed the risks of relying on a single funding source for critical open-source infrastructure.
